A bit about me.

I'm a full-stack engineer based in Bristol, UK, working at Artis Works on a financial app. Most of my day is spent on candlestick charts and the custom plugins around them, though real-time market data is a big part of it too: live prices coming in over WebSockets, an AG Grid that has to stay performant while it updates, and the dependency graphs sitting behind those numbers in the worker.

I've been writing code almost daily since 2017. Outside of work it's mostly open source projects, and a lot of it ends up being about privacy and security: an encrypted file-sharing app, an anonymous chat client, a password manager, and a self-hosted stock portfolio tracker. Symmetric and asymmetric encryption is something I enjoy working with, particularly when it lets an app work without asking the user to trust a server.

I like clean, readable code, and I like being involved in the whole thing: requirements, design, migrations, tests and release, not only the part that renders.

Front-End Engineer

  • Working on candlestick charts and the custom Lightweight Charts plugins around them, which is where a lot of my time goes.
  • Contributing to a real-time financial app that renders WebSocket price data through AG Grid, with nested dependency graphs behind the numbers.
  • Using SharedWorkers so one socket connection and IDB cache is shared across open tabs, which keeps heavier computation off the render thread.
  • Writing migration scripts, creating tables and relationships, and helping manage a Hasura database behind a GraphQL API.
  • Taking part in technical discussions and solution-design meetings, and helping decide how things get built, along with taking ownership of certain features and components.
  • Writing and running end-to-end tests with Playwright, and unit tests with Vitest.

Focus

What I work on.

Roughly split between my day job and whatever I'm building outside work hours.

Charts and market data

Candlestick charts and the custom plugins that go with them, which is a lot of my working day. Alongside that, live prices arriving over WebSockets, dependency graphs recalculating the values that depend on them, and grids that have to keep feeling performant while all of it updates. Thousands of updates per second.

Encryption and privacy

The common theme in most of my personal projects. Symmetric and asymmetric encryption, hashing, and apps built so the server never needs to be trusted with anything readable: file sharing, chat, password storage, and tools that work without sending your data anywhere.

The rest of the stack

I'd rather not stop at the front end. GraphQL schemas and Hasura migrations, REST APIs and Node microservices, Postgres modelling, and end-to-end tests with Playwright. Generally the bits that need doing before a feature can go out.

A word on AI...

I use AI the way I'd use any other tool that saves time. It's good at the straightforward work: boilerplate, repetitive refactors, test scaffolding, the first pass at something I already know the shape of. Used properly it makes me faster and frees up time for the parts that actually need thought.

What I don't do is hand over ownership. Anything pushed under my name is my responsibility, so I read every line of it, and if I can't explain why it's written that way then it doesn't go out. The architecture and the approach are mine to work out, and I put real effort into leading how a thing gets built rather than handing that decision to a model.

I've spent a lot of time reviewing pull requests, a good share of them full of AI written code, so I've seen what happens when it goes in unchecked. Merge all of it without an engineer properly thinking it through and I can guarantee you end up with a mountain of tech debt, a nightmare of security vulnerabilities, and features so fragile that anything you plan to build on top of them turns into a problem.
